Photovoltaic Lighting Certification Officially Implemented; Industry Standardization Tackles Market Chaos

At the 2025 China Lighting Appliance Industry Standards and Quality Conference, solar photovoltaic lighting products from five companies—Wuhu NVC, Sanxiong Aurora, Bull Optoelectronics, and three others—received the first batch of "Domestic Solar Photovoltaic Lighting Product Certifications," marking the official entry of this niche sector into a standardized development phase. The certification is based on the group standard "Domestic Solar Photovoltaic Lighting Products — Performance Requirements," released in October 2024, which specifically addresses longstanding market issues such as falsely advertised capacities, exaggerated power ratings, and inadequate luminous efficiency.
The core metrics of this certification are driving technological innovation across the industry. Notably, the "full-charge illumination time" requirement mandates that products maintain at least 70% of their initial luminous flux for a duration of no less than 6 hours under maximum brightness settings—and even achieve overnight (10–12 hour) illumination, effectively eliminating the industry’s longstanding pain point of "flickering dimness reminiscent of fireflies." To meet these stringent standards, companies have stepped up their efforts to tackle key technical challenges: Wuhu NVC has optimized charge-discharge efficiency through an adaptive voltage-and-current control algorithm; Bull Optoelectronics has enhanced light output by integrating TWM chips with high-reflection optical materials; and Langyue Energy has adopted wide-temperature-compatible battery cells paired with temperature-controlled protection circuits, enabling their products to operate reliably in environments ranging from -30°C to 65°C, while also extending illumination duration by 20% during cloudy or rainy days. Additionally, the standard introduces an innovative "Daily Energy Service" grading system, categorizing China’s national solar irradiation resources into four distinct regions, thereby guiding consumers toward informed purchasing decisions and helping them avoid unnecessary resource waste.
The policy benefits, combined with robust market demand, are jointly driving the upgrade of the photovoltaic lighting industry. Supported by the "Dual Carbon" strategy and rural revitalization policies, the e-commerce retail market is expected to surpass 10 billion yuan in size by 2025. Meanwhile, the overseas market continues to perform strongly, with exports reaching US$1.8 billion in 2024—a 35% year-on-year increase. Demand for green energy solutions remains particularly strong in regions such as Africa, Southeast Asia, and Europe and North America. The establishment of a certification system not only provides consumers with a reliable basis for making informed choices but also serves as a critical threshold for government procurement and business partnerships, accelerating the elimination of low-quality production capacity and propelling the industry’s transformation from "scale expansion" to "quality enhancement." Currently, this standard is being aligned with the international IEC standards framework, while discussions are underway with organizations like TÜV and CSA to explore mutual recognition of certifications, paving the way for Chinese photovoltaic lighting products to gain wider global access.
