Driven by the "Dual Carbon" strategy and the green energy revolution, China's photovoltaic lighting products have achieved rapid expansion in the global market, thanks to their technological advantages and cost competitiveness. Export volumes continue to grow at a robust pace, making them a new highlight in the lighting industry's export performance. Data shows that in 2024, China's exports of photovoltaic lighting products reached US$1.8 billion, a year-on-year increase of 35%, accounting for 3% of the total lighting industry exports. In the first half of 2025, exports already amounted to US$800 million, with export volumes up 25% compared to the same period last year. Demand remains strong in regions such as Africa, Southeast Asia, Latin America, as well as Europe and North America.
China's competitive edge in exporting photovoltaic lighting products stems from its technological innovation and leadership in standard-setting. On the technical front, domestic companies have made breakthroughs in core technologies such as high-efficiency PV modules, long-life batteries, and intelligent charge-discharge control systems. As a result, their products boast outstanding advantages like superior light-to-electricity conversion efficiency, extended battery life, and exceptional adaptability to diverse environmental conditions. For instance, photovoltaic lighting solutions developed by companies like Wuhu NVC and Bull Optoelectronics incorporate innovative features such as adaptive voltage-and-current regulation algorithms and wide-temperature-compatible batteries, effectively meeting the unique lighting and climate demands of different regions. At the standards level, China’s recently released group standard "Household Solar Photovoltaic Lighting Products — Performance Requirements" not only sets clear guidelines for the domestic market but also aligns closely with the IEC international standards system. Currently, Chinese manufacturers are actively exploring mutual recognition collaborations with leading global certification bodies like TÜV and CSA, paving the way for smoother international market access. Compared to similar international products, China’s photovoltaic lighting solutions offer significant advantages in terms of cost-effectiveness and technical adaptability. This makes them an ideal choice for addressing basic lighting needs in energy-scarce regions such as Africa and Southeast Asia. Meanwhile, in markets like Europe and North America, these products are increasingly favored by consumers eager to embrace the green energy transition, thanks to their eco-friendly, low-carbon attributes.
The rapid growth in photovoltaic lighting exports has also brought both new development opportunities and challenges to the industry. On the opportunity front, the global demand for green energy continues to rise, creating vast market potential for photovoltaic lighting products. Meanwhile, driven by the Belt and Road Initiative, infrastructure cooperation between China and countries along the initiative’s routes is steadily deepening, providing favorable conditions for exporting photovoltaic lighting solutions. However, challenges remain: international trade barriers, differences in technical standards, and currency fluctuations could all pose obstacles to export growth. Additionally, some companies’ aggressive low-price competition strategies may trigger trade disputes. To address these challenges, industry players should intensify research and development efforts to enhance product value-added; actively participate in the formulation of international standards, thereby strengthening their influence on the global stage; diversify export markets to reduce reliance on any single region; and bolster brand-building initiatives to boost recognition and acceptance in international markets. As technological innovation and global expansion continue to advance, China’s photovoltaic lighting products are poised to capture an even larger share of the global market, becoming a key driver of the "going global" strategy for China’s lighting industry.
