Standards serve as the technological backbone for high-quality development in the industry. In recent years, China has accelerated the advancement of standardization efforts within the lighting sector, formulating a series of national and industry-specific standards in niche areas such as smart lighting, photovoltaic lighting, and healthy lighting. This has resulted in a comprehensive standards framework that spans the entire value chain—from product R&D and manufacturing to engineering applications and testing & certification—thereby driving the industry’s transformation from "scale expansion" toward "quality enhancement."
The lighting industry's standardization efforts are focused on three core areas: First, green and energy-saving standards—aligned with the "Dual Carbon" goals—aim to establish energy-efficiency benchmarks and testing methods for products like LED and photovoltaic lighting, thereby accelerating the phasing out of low-efficiency models. Second, smart interconnectivity standards seek to unify communication protocols and interface specifications for intelligent lighting systems, effectively addressing challenges in device interoperability. Third, health and safety standards will regulate key parameters of healthy lighting products, including spectral characteristics, glare control, and electromagnetic compatibility, ensuring both user well-being and product safety. China Illuminating Engineering Society has played a pivotal role in this standardization process. Its Standardization Committee has actively streamlined the standard-setting procedures and intensified the promotion of group standards, fostering a deep integration of technological innovation with established norms. For instance, in the field of photovoltaic lighting, the society recently released the group standard "Performance Requirements for Household Solar Photovoltaic Lighting Products," laying the foundation for a comprehensive product certification system. Meanwhile, in the realm of healthy lighting, it has contributed to the development of the national standard "Methods for Evaluating Healthy Lighting," helping to guide and shape the industry's sustainable growth.
The implementation of standards has yielded significant benefits for industry development. On one hand, these standards provide enterprises with a technical foundation for research, development, and production, encouraging companies to increase investment in technological innovation and ultimately enhancing both product quality and their core competitiveness. On the other hand, standards serve as a crucial support for market regulation, effectively curbing the chaos caused by low-quality, low-price competition while safeguarding consumer rights. Products that have achieved standard certification enjoy a clear edge in market competition—they not only gain consumers' trust more easily but also become essential prerequisites for government procurement and participation in large-scale project bidding. For instance, in the photovoltaic lighting sector, the first five companies certified have already taken a leading position on e-commerce platforms and in engineering tenders. Meanwhile, in the smart lighting field, sales of products compliant with the Matter protocol standard have surged by over 50% year-on-year. Looking ahead, the lighting industry will further strengthen its efforts toward international benchmarking, promoting mutual recognition between domestic standards and global benchmarks such as IEC, thereby elevating China's influence in the global lighting industry. At the same time, the focus will shift toward cutting-edge technologies and emerging applications, accelerating the development of standards for innovative areas like quantum lighting and flexible lighting—providing robust support for the industry's continued innovation and growth.
